The Rivers of Lapland Icedrift

Now is the time when nature finally gets new life from the long winter hibernation. We have been out on excursions just to see the ice drift and we have spent several hours at the riverbank, barbeque, walked, and just enjoyed the wonderful time in a powerful spectacle as the large ice floes pass in the rushing water here right outside of Kiruna city. After lunch, the children have devoted themselves to treasure hunting where sweets are found to be theirs and they are enjoying themselves fully here in this years first days of warm weather and spring sun. I made a walk along the riverbank alone to see which seabirds have arrived and I found to my delight that this year along the harness there were significantly more bird species than last year. For me, this was a great pleasure when I was able to see all these fantastically beautiful birds with a really good hunting binocular.

All this we did during a day when we had received a phone call from some friends who spent the day up in the higher mountains where they went on snowmobiles, it is still today 2020-05-24 enough snow in the mountains so that It is still good with snow for snowmobiling, or ski conditions are awesome. Our friends were out icefishing for arctic char near Rostujávri. I myself ended the ice fishing season here just over a week ago after driving out to Torneträsk and Kaisepakte between Kiruna and Abisko. Ice conditions can look very different this season and it can be dangerous to go out on bad ice, especially if you go out early in the morning and during the day when the heat from the sun has made its ice can quickly weaken in those lakes were there still are ice. However, in Kilpisjärvi, Finland and around the arctic char eldorado of Rostujávri there are still around 90 cm thick ice and optimal icefishing conditions.

While others in the locals here have already started preparations for the upcoming salmon fishing season, which this year is expected to have the largest amount of salmon rising after the rivers here in areas in the Muonio river, the Lätäs eno, the Lainio river, the Kalix river and the Torne river around midsummer, ie 2020-06-20. We are also expecting this year despite the pandemic a large number of tourists to the area and we see a very strong trend in the sale of tents and outdoors gear associate to camping right now, which is a gratifying indication that visitors to the area are preparing to stay at campsites, or outdoors in any genuine beautiful mountain side or any waterfront riverbank or lakeside.

For those of you who want to visit Kiruna this summer, for hiking, mountaineering, flyfishing, or for the midnight sun, I would recommend staying overnight in one of the new arctic huts that Kiruna Guidetur  has arranged strategically located around Kiruna city as wilderness cabins for the season.
